Cardiff Central Market was clearly a popular shopping venue in late Victorian Cardiff, complimenting the arcades as a location for small, specialist retailers.
Ashton’s the fishmongers, one of the best known stallholders in the market today, have been tenants since the opening. In 1930 the firm claimed to have been tenants in the previous market since 1866.
The market now represents one of the main outlets in the city centre for fresh fish, meat and vegetables while at the same time offering a wide variety of non-food goods. This traditional Victorian market remains a well established landmark in the history of Cardiff.
